In a politically stable and innovation-friendly environment, Mauritius is positioning itself as a place of professional and personal fulfillment for talent from all over the world.

We had the opportunity to chat with El, a developer from Madagascar, who recently made the move to Esokia in Mauritius.

Interview:

What motivated you to leave Madagascar and come to Mauritius to work in IT development?

El: I was inspired by the desire to take on new challenges and grow professionally in a dynamic environment like Mauritius. I found that Mauritius opened its doors to me and welcomed me into its own environment, where IT development is combined with passion and excellence.

In addition, I chose Mauritius because its strategic location at the crossroads of Africa, Asia and the Indian Ocean makes it a hub for international trade, offering unique opportunities for networking and collaboration on a global scale.

How would you rate the job market for developers in Mauritius compared to Madagascar?

El: In Mauritius, the job market for developers is incredibly dynamic, offering a multitude of opportunities in various sectors, which far exceeds what I experienced in Madagascar.

The modern infrastructure and attractive government incentives for technology companies make Mauritius an excellent choice for those looking to expand into IT development.

What are the main differences you've noticed in terms of work culture and professional opportunities between Madagascar and Mauritius?

El: In Mauritius, I was impressed by a collaborative and innovative work culture, offering a multitude of professional opportunities that allowed me to grow and prosper professionally far beyond what I had imagined.

As a Front-End developer with 3 years' experience, specializing in React Js and Next Js technologies, I found Mauritius a fertile ground for putting my skills into practice and developing new ones.

Furthermore, the cultural diversity and tolerance in the professional environment are aspects that have also impressed me. Here, I find that every voice is valued, every perspective is respected, and every individual is encouraged to contribute to the development of the Mauritian technology community.

What specific advantages do you find in working in Mauritius in terms of quality of life, working environment and career prospects?

El: Working in Mauritius has been an opportunity of a lifetime. The quality of life is exceptional in this tropical paradise, with a relaxing working environment and career prospects that are evolving at lightning speed, offering opportunities for continuous learning and growth. What's more, support for start-ups and access to specialist training are huge advantages for developers like me.

What challenges have you faced as a Malagasy developer working in Mauritius, and how have you overcome them?

El: This choice of life is not without its challenges. I quickly tackled these challenges by adapting enthusiastically to a new working culture and overcoming the language barrier thanks to my determination to learn and integrate. Managing the stress of working at a faster pace and taking the initiative in a new professional environment were also challenges I overcame with perseverance.

What was the most surprising thing you discovered when you arrived in Mauritius, that you would never have imagined before as a Malagasy developer?

El: The diversity of professional opportunities in Mauritius totally blew me away. I never imagined I'd find so many innovative start-ups and exciting projects, creating a vibrant tech ecosystem that far exceeds my expectations. What's more, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of life and the respect for work-life balance.

What do you miss most about Madagascar?

El: Although I'm thriving in Mauritius, I really miss my family. They are a precious part of my identity and support, and their absence is the only difficult aspect of this incredible professional adventure.
